Welcome to the Gamers' Alliance |
8/27/2008 |
Hey Ya'll!
Welcome to a new semester of the Gamers' Alliance. We had the Student Organization Showcase today and managed to get a respectable number of new people to join the mailing list. Plans are in the works for two game nights this semester (sorry it's not three but some of us are writing Thesis) and a couple of interactive seminars (hush, they WON'T be boring) specifically geared towards Freshmen and Sophomores (but everyone else is definitely invited).
So, keep your eye on the site for the new developments!

Thanks to all of you who came out to play last night - we had an excellent turnout and we think that all of you had a great time. Well, it is the end of the semester for the Gamers' Alliance but have no fear! We will be back in the fall with even more exciting game nights, lockins, and (maybe) even a Gaming Conference!
As some of you may know, our charter says that the President can only be the President for two years. Evie Powell has been the Gamers' Alliance President for two years and it is time for her to step down. Therefore, we have a rather huge hole to fill within the organization. As of right now, there has only been one person who has agreed to run for the Presidency. If you would like to be considered for this position, or indeed, any position on the board, please send an email to gamers-alliance@googlegroups.com with your resume attached and denote which position(s) you are applying for.
Some of the jobs that we need to fill are...
Club President
Secretary
Webmaster
Press Secretary
We will have more pertinent details coming soon!
It's been a great year and all of you made it totally worth our time and effort. The Gamers' Alliance thanks you.

Smash Brothers Brawl Tournament |
|
The long anticipated ultimate game night is finally here! Gamers' Alliance is hosting a Smash Brothers Brawl tournament at our next game night. Because we're anticipating a large turn-out for this event and we have no money for food (pout), we will charge a $1.00 at the door (not too bad) unless you bring food or drink to share. We're not picky! A bag o' chips or an off-brand 2 liter soda is sufficient. There is also a $1 tournament entry fee. The prize will be determined but should be pretty sweet.
Who: Gamers' Alliance (cuz we are awesome)
What: The bestest game night evar!
When: Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 6:30pm - 10:30pm
Where: CONE Room 112
Why: again, because we are awesome
As always, feel free to bring your own games, consoles, compys, televisions, etc... Standard check-in rules apply so your stuff is protected. If you wanna go ahead and fill out your checkin sheet print out this Game Night Check-In Sheet and either bring it to the game night OR send it to Evie.
Wii-up and prepare to get smacked down!
Hope to see all of you there!

CANCELLATION ANNOUNCEMENT The UNC Charlotte Gamers' Alliance Game Development Lock-in Challenge has been postponed to a date to be determined (Fall 2008).
We apologize for having to cancel the lockin, however, the Board Members have determined that this is the best course of action for the Gamers' Alliance at this time seeing as how we are collectively swamped with our own coursework and real work.
Howevver, this does not mean that we won't have another Game Night...in fact, we are going to have a Game Night in April (date and location to be released later). Keep your eyes glued to the website for further updates. Also, we are going to have a Smash Brothers Brawl Tournament so Wii-up and prepare to get smacked down!
Hope to see all of you there!

Battle of the Rock Bands! |
|
Tonight's game night was smaller than our previous attempts but was even more fun for the Gamers' Alliance staff than any other game night. While we had other games there, the focus of the evening was definitely on the new Harmonix game, Rock Band. Six teams strutted their stuff on the AfterHours stage, perfoming their three strongest songs for an appreciative audience. Third place went to Bunnicula (headed by Evie), second to AJ's team, and first to the darkhorse team that showed up out of the woodworks and blew the rest of us away with some serious skills.
Congtats to all the teams that competed...it's definitely not easy to perform on stage as opposed to your living room!
Also, keep an eye out for a totally informal and non game night chance for some redemption with your band. We don't have a time or a date yet but some of us are clamoring for a rematch!

The theme this time is Retro games. This means N64, Playstation1,
Sega Saturn, and older. If you have consoles that fall into this
category, those would be preferred over newer consoles (PS2 and
later). We will still have a room for newer consoles but it is
smaller than the main room. Room 112 (the biggest room) will be the
Retro room. We will still have some newer consoles in room 113 for
those who want to play them (Wii, and Xbox360 primarily). And room
109 will be for the tournament. Speaking of which...
The tournament: Street Fighter II on Super Nintendo!

Tonight was the first time that the Gamers' Alliance hosted a Halo 3 Tournament and, from the commentary received, it was a rousing success. With over 100 people in attendance, the night was full of XBox, Wii, Playstation, and PC gamers having a blast.
Clint Rowland (first) and Jason Cambell (second) took the single player Halo 3 competition and stomped them into the ground. The Halo 3 Team Deathmatch competition went to Clint Rowland, Jason Cambell, Josh Cambell, and Gabriael R.
Congratulations to all our winners and we hope to see you for the next game night, which will be November 20th and will feature a Retro Game theme for our members.

100+ PEOPLE AT LAST GAME NIGHT |
|
Thanks to everyone that came out to the last game night and making it a huge success. We ran our first game tournament last night with Wii Boxing and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun with it. It is because of your dedication to games that the ideal Charlotte gaming community is finally being realized. We had such a positive response to Tuesday's game night that we've already started organizing the next event, which will be partially sponsored by Microsoft! We hope to see everyone there! Note: There may be a small cover charge involved. More details later.
See calendar for more details on next game night.
